Yesterday we rolled into Oklahoma ...most of the road is a two laner along rolling green hills and red soil....beautiful ! But the speed limit is 65! It would be like traveling Indian Riffle that fast!
One of the first places that caught our attention was the very very small town of Commerce, the home of Mickey Mantle. We got to wondering which house was actually his, so we asked some kids who looked to be ten or so. They didn't even know who he WAS!!! and his house was actually two blocks away!! Check the pics...the one with the red metal barn to the right is his. His dad worked at the mines, but when he got home he would pitch balls to young Mickey using that red barn as the backboard. Mickey would hit toward the house! If he hit the house below the windows, it was counted by his dad as a single....above the windows, a double...on the roof, a triple, and over the house, a homerun!! He said he was the only kid in town who didn't get in trouble if he broke a window!
We visited the Will Rogers Museum this morning...AWESOME!! One of the best personal museums I have ever seen! And you know me, I never saw a museum I didn't like! Then we traveled on to Tulsa for the HIGHLIGHT of our day! Lunch with a very special college almost roommate friend, Mary and her husband JB. We chatted and chatted and promised to keep in touch forever!! Thanks guys!
The rest of our day was filled with interesting sights....The infamous Lincoln Motel in Chandler, and the beautiful redstone county museum and 66 gift shop.... no thimbles!!
In Arcadia, we photographed the milk bottle sculpture in front of Townley Dairy, the old round barn built in 1898, and a street sign that made us feel right at home! We settled in for the night near Yukon, the home of Garth Brooks. We ate authenic Mexican tonight...........delish!
