HALFWAY THERE!

This morning we ate a wonderful breakfast in Clinton, OK, at the locals' favorite place, The Country Kitchen. Several older Oklahoma fellers were gathered together discussing the news, weather, ect. We couldn't help but overhear....

Oakie 1: My wife still thinks I'm good lookin.
Oakie 2 : I used to be good lookin...but my face got weak.

Later we visited the VERY interesting 66 Museum in town, where we met out new best friends Jerry and Ginger! They are from St Louis and are traveling the road to Albuquerque!

We are noticing an abundance of wind turbines being used for power, lots of Angus cattle in fields, the high plains are beginning...a vast almost limitless treeless horizon, and you can see storms approaching that are 30 minutes away! Today we actually SAW scattered showers! The sky is a deeper shade of blue here. Often Route 66 runs right alongside Highway 40. Sometimes it is the service road. There is usually a line of old telephone poles running alongside it. So many of the little towns on 66 have died or are just lingering. It is depressing after a while to view this final glimpse of another era.

We trekked across Texas today. Even the big towns are small...and the small towns..don't blink!
In Amarillo, we enjoyed the city's new come back area on Sixth St full of boutiques, eateries, antiques. On the west part of town is the Cadillac Ranch where ten spray painted Cadillacs are half buried with their tailfins sticking up! We thought about you Fred! We met another couple there from Yosemite, CA. They were going east

Ha! (That's hi in Texan)......We celebrated in Adrian, Texas!!!!!!!!!! It is the halfway point!! But we traveled on to Tucumcari, NM before we called it a day. The Hampton master recommended The Del for dinner........fabulous Mexican food! No kiding, we saw Jerry and Ginger eating there on their way through town!! Incredible! As we chatted outside, we all watched Elvis enter the restaurant! HONEST!
