Our trip is coming to an end.... We have traveled 29 days.....almost 8000 miles...crossed the Mississippi FOUR TIMES (you figure it out).......and driven through 18 different states! AND we have enjoyed every single minute of it...if you don't count our accident.
Today we drove through the Amana Colonies.........an old German settlement where the people chose to live in a commune of seven villages. They have some sort of special activity every weekend. We were a day too early for the Home Made Brewing Festival ....but it sounds like fun!
Herbert Hoover was born, buried, and has his Presidential Library all in West Branch, Iowa. How convenient for us! We were able to tune into 610 on our radio and hear about it on our way....Thanks Bill and ISS......Quite an interesting U.S.President! I didn't know he was an orphan and spent much of his time and money feeding orphan children around the world during WWI. He was the one who started UNICEF! He had lived in Australia and China as a mining engineer. Hoover was one of our most educated and wealthy Presidents. He was elected in a landslide victory...the people felt he was Superman, capable of anything......and then.......the Stock Market crashed............... He was devastated......and set up ways to help and feed our people. He lived until his 90s and was a special friend of Harry Truman. He died while Lynden Johnson was President! Hoover lived through an era of great change in the country from the Wright Brothers first flight to the first rocket to the moon!!
We drove through Quad Cities....and thought of the Baker family and the wedding we atended here so many years ago...........The Mississippi is quite wide at this point.......see pic!
